Nervous about the dentist? You're in the right place.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care — sometimes for years. Caring for anxious and nervous patients isn't a sideline for us. It's one of the things Southside Dental Toowoomba is known for.
You're not being silly, and you're not alone
Fear of the dentist is real and common — for some people it's mild nerves, for others it's severe enough that even booking an appointment takes courage. It often traces back to a bad experience, sometimes decades old. Whatever's behind yours, you won't need to justify it here, and you definitely won't be told to "just relax".
The hardest part is usually the first step. Many of our most relaxed regular patients started as people who hadn't been to a dentist in ten or twenty years.
How we make visits easier
Tell us when you book. Mention you're nervous when booking (online or by phone) and we'll allow extra time, so nothing ever feels rushed.
A talk-first appointment. Your first visit can simply be a conversation and a look — nothing has to happen in that chair that you haven't agreed to. Many anxious patients find just this step breaks the cycle.
You're in control. We agree on a stop signal before we start — raise your hand and everything pauses, every time, no questions asked.
Explained, or not — your choice. Some people relax when every step is narrated; others would rather bring headphones and be somewhere else mentally. Both are completely fine, just tell us which helps you.
Gentle, modern techniques. From the way we deliver local anaesthetic to breaking longer treatments into shorter visits, small things add up to a very different experience from the one you may remember.
A judgement-free plan. If it's been years, we prioritise: what's urgent, what can wait, what it costs. You decide the pace, and payment plans mean cost doesn't have to force delays.
Practical tips for your first visit back
Book a morning appointment so you're not dreading it all day. Bring headphones and a playlist. Eat normally beforehand. Consider bringing a support person — that's welcome here. And remember the first appointment can just be a look and a chat: knowing exactly where you stand is usually far less scary than the unknown.
Frequently asked questions
Will you judge me for the state of my teeth?
No — genuinely, no. We've seen everything, and our job is to help you move forward from today, not to relitigate the past. Judgement-free care is core to how this practice runs.
Can my first appointment just be a chat?
Absolutely. A look and a conversation, with nothing else happening unless you choose it, is a completely valid first appointment — and a common one here.
What if I panic during treatment?
We agree a stop signal before starting, and we honour it instantly, every time. Treatment can pause or stop entirely — you stay in control throughout.
Is there anything to help me relax during treatment?
There are options that can help nervous patients get through treatment comfortably — talk to us about what would suit you when you book or at your first visit, and we'll plan your care around it.
I haven't been to a dentist in over 10 years. Where do I start?
With one appointment — our $199 new patient offer covers a full examination, necessary X-rays and a prioritised plan. From there, everything moves at your pace.
Ready when you are
Book online (no phone call needed — many anxious patients prefer it), or call our friendly team on 07 4635 1444 and just say "I'm a nervous patient". They'll take it from there.
