Wisdom teeth removal in Toowoomba
Wisdom teeth don't always need to come out — but when they're painful, infected or pushing on other teeth, timely removal can save a lot of trouble. We assess honestly and only recommend removal when it genuinely helps you.
Do your wisdom teeth need removing?
Wisdom teeth usually appear from the late teens to mid-twenties. When there's room and they come through cleanly, they can stay. Problems start when they're impacted — stuck against the tooth in front, tilted, or only partly through the gum — which can cause pain, repeated infections around the gum flap, decay in the wisdom tooth or its neighbour, and pressure on other teeth.
Signs worth getting checked: pain or swelling at the back of your jaw, a bad taste or smell from one area, difficulty opening your mouth, or food constantly trapping behind your last tooth. An examination and X-ray shows us exactly how each wisdom tooth is positioned.
What removal involves
1. Assessment. Examination and an OPG X-ray to see the roots and their relationship to nerves and neighbouring teeth.
2. An honest plan. Many wisdom teeth can be removed comfortably here in the practice under local anaesthetic. If your case is complex — for example, roots close to the nerve — we'll tell you plainly and refer you to an oral surgeon rather than push ahead. You'll always know which category you're in before deciding anything.
3. The procedure. The area is fully numbed and we work carefully, keeping you informed (or not — some patients prefer headphones and a hand signal, and that's fine too).
4. Recovery. You'll leave with clear written aftercare instructions. Most people are back to normal routines within a few days; see our post-op care guides.
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in Toowoomba?
Cost depends mostly on how the tooth sits. As a guide: a simple extraction is $290–$380, a surgical extraction $510, and wisdom tooth removal $510 per tooth — and the OPG X-ray we take to plan the removal is bulk billed with Medicare. After your X-ray we'll quote each tooth individually, in writing, before you decide. Health fund rebates often apply — see the full pricing guide for item codes — and payment plans are available from $20 a week.
Frequently asked questions
Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The area is completely numbed with local anaesthetic before we begin — you'll feel pressure but shouldn't feel pain. Some soreness and swelling over the following days is normal and manageable with the aftercare plan we give you.
Do all four wisdom teeth need to come out at once?
Not necessarily. Sometimes only one or two are causing trouble. We assess each tooth individually and only recommend removing the ones that genuinely need it.
How long is recovery?
Most people manage work or study within a couple of days for simple removals, a little longer for impacted teeth. We'll give you a realistic expectation for your specific case, plus written aftercare instructions.
What if my case is complicated?
If an X-ray shows your case would be better handled by an oral surgeon — for example, roots very close to the nerve — we'll refer you rather than take unnecessary risks. You'll get an honest recommendation either way.
Can I wait and see?
Sometimes, yes — a symptom-free, well-positioned wisdom tooth can simply be monitored at your regular check-ups. Painful or infected teeth are a different story: infections tend to come back, so earlier treatment usually means an easier time.
