Dental crowns in Toowoomba
A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth completely — protecting what's left, restoring its strength and shape, and blending in with the teeth around it.
When a filling isn't enough
Fillings work well when most of the tooth is still sound. But when a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, badly worn or has had root canal treatment, there may not be enough solid structure left for a filling to hold — and each repair gets harder than the last. A crown wraps the whole tooth, spreading biting forces evenly and protecting it against further cracking.
We'll always tell you honestly which side of that line your tooth is on. If a filling will genuinely do the job, that's what we'll recommend.
Getting a crown at Southside Dental
1. Assessment. We check the tooth is a good candidate — sound roots and healthy gums matter for a crown to last.
2. Preparation. Under local anaesthetic the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, and a precise impression or scan is taken. You'll wear a temporary crown while yours is made.
3. Fitting. Your custom crown — matched to the shape and colour of your teeth — is checked for fit and bite, then bonded in place.
How much does a dental crown cost in Toowoomba?
The main cost factor is the material — different options suit different teeth. As a guide: a zirconia crown is $1,800, a gold crown $2,500, and a composite crown $676. Where the tooth first needs a core build-up to support the crown, that's $275. You'll get a written, itemised quote before treatment starts, and many health funds rebate part of the cost — see the full pricing guide for item codes to quote to your fund. Payment plans are available from $20 a week.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a crown last?
With good hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns commonly last many years. Grinding and clenching shorten their life — if that's you, we may recommend a night splint to protect your investment.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed for preparation, and fitting the final crown is usually comfortable. Some sensitivity while wearing the temporary crown is normal and settles.
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two — one to prepare the tooth and take the impression, one to fit the finished crown once it comes back from the lab.
Crown or filling — how do I know which I need?
It comes down to how much sound tooth remains. We'll show you the tooth (photos and X-rays help) and explain the reasoning, so the recommendation makes sense rather than being taken on faith.
Will the crown match my other teeth?
Yes — shade and shape are matched to your surrounding teeth so the crown blends in naturally. For front teeth we take extra care with colour matching.
